The Calm Within The Storm

SEL Concepts – Self-Awareness, Responsible Decision Making, Self-Regulation

Activity:
Ask the students to check in with the weather station in their head. Is it clear and sunny, partly cloudy, overcast and rainy, or a full on Category 5 Hurricane?

  • Take out your mindfulness jar or snowglobe (or watch your teacher’s). If your mind is feeling:
    • just a bit cloudy- shake it gently
    • overcast – give it a good shake
    • Stormy – shake, shake, shake it up!
    • Now with your feet on the ground, take 3 deep belly breaths and feel your mind clear and settle as your mindfulness jar clears and settles as well.
  • We are like the sun, steady and constant. Our thoughts, feelings, and even experiences are like the clouds-they come and go. They can feel like a quick passing shower, a downpour, or a full on hurricane – but the clouds do clear, and the sun is always shining. You always have access to your wisdom by tuning into your heart after settling down with your breath. Remember even during the storm you are ok!
